The purpose of undertaking this qualitative action research project was to examine how introducing a traditional method of making could promote an appreciation of Craft for the Junior Certificate Cycle. The project aimed to engender the basic hand building techniques and methodical attention required to research, design, critically reflect and create a ceramic 3D form and aimed to support pupil engagement with craft education and artistic practices.
The catalyst to this research project was a Short Course designed using the prescribed NCCA guidelines. This project set out to enable the students to slow down and make considered decisions and problem solve solutions to the various technical possibilities and limitations involved in order to build a large sculpture based on their preliminary work. Students were encouraged to engage in hand rendered and digitally documented (blogger) reflective practice and thus critical reflection, commenting on their ideas and opinions through the combination of these platforms |
